Grad Knights: First Weeks @ RU Fall 2025

All incoming and continuing graduate students are invited to various welcome and community-building programs in September to kick off the Fall 2025 semester.  Programs are designed to introduce you to essential resources and provide opportunities to connect with other graduate students, learn about graduate student organizations, and participate in campus-wide events. There are graduate student-exclusive programs as well as university events open for both undergraduate and graduate students.

National Student Parent Month Programs

Every September, the Office of Graduate Student Life celebrates our Graduate Parenting Students during National Student Parent Month. This month of programming is dedicated to recognizing the importance of empowering student parents as they balance the demands of academics and family life; raise awareness about the unique challenges parenting students face; and provide opportunities to learn about resources and connect with other graduate student parents.  Click HERE for schedule of programs. 

First-Generation Graduate Student Welcome Social

Community Walking Tour of New Brunswick – Wednesday, October 1, 3pm-5pm

Graduate Affinity Groups

Join a Graduate Student Affinity Group

Looking to get connected with other graduate students and participate in a fun and supportive community? Consider joining a peer-designed and peer facilitated affinity group!  Affinity groups are affirming spaces to build community with peers who share experiences, backgrounds, and social identities and connect with peers for personal and professional support and around shared interests.  Six Graduate Affinity Groups are being offered this semester: African Graduate Students, BIPOC LGBTQIA2S+ Graduate Students, Chinese Graduate Students, Rutgers International Graduate Students (RINGS), Southeast Asian Graduate Students (SEA), and Supporting Neurodiversity at Rutgers. Free Pedagogy Support Courses for Fall 2025

The Graduate Writing Program (GWP) offers a free, three-credit pedagogy support course, the Teaching Assistant Seminar and Practicum, available to all students. Registration is through Special Permission only, please contact GWP@english.rutgers.edu for details.

TIIP Teaching Workshop: Intro to Canvas – Tuesday, September 9, 12pm-1:30pm

In this workshop, facilitated by University Online Education Services, we will discuss the different tools available in Canvas to create a consistent and clear course site for students to navigate. You’ll learn the fundamentals of setting up your course in Canvas and creating assignments and assessments. We’ll explore how to navigate the Canvas interface, add content to modules (files, videos, links, etc.), upload your syllabus, and communicate with students. You’ll also learn how to create Assignments and Discussions, set up rubrics, manage group work, and use SpeedGrader and the gradebook to provide feedback and track student progress. Free Graduate Writing Courses for Fall 2025

Registration is open for Fall 2025 Graduate Writing Program (GWP) courses! Students of all academic disciplines are encouraged to register for GWP courses to receive individualized, discipline-specific feedback throughout the semester. These free, zero-credit courses carry no additional work other than writing students are already completing for their academic programs. Stand Up Paddleboarding – Tuesday, August 26, 12pm-3pm

Location: Cook/Douglass Recreation Center (50 Biel Rd, Cook Campus, New Brunswick)
Register HERE!  There is a $25 registration cost to participate in this event.

Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is a fun and easy way to engage with nature in a relaxing setting!  Join us at the Cook Recreation Center, where we will gather as a group before heading over to the lake. After you've had a chance to familiarize yourself with paddleboarding under the guidance of our staff, we'll spend our morning on a relaxing paddle around the lake. Take some time to unplug and unwind with us.  This activity is appropriate for all experience levels! Join us with some friends or sign up yourself to make new connections with like-minded folks.  Rutgers Recreation will provide transportation from campus, as well as paddleboards, paddles, and PFD's for everyone. We strongly suggest that you wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather (you'll probably get wet!), and bring a towel, snacks, and plenty of drinking water. We require everyone to wear an approved flotation device (PFD) and footwear (sneakers, river sandals, or closed-toe shoes - no flip flops or slides, please) on all of our water adventures.

RU Swim School – Wednesday, September 10, 6pm - 8pm

Location: Sonny Werblin Recreation Center, Werblin Patio Pool (656 Bartholomew Rd, Busch Campus, Piscataway)

RU Swim School is a free 2-hour swim lesson at the Werblin Patio Pool, which is 3Β½ feet deep and maintained at 86 degrees. Participants will learn basic water safety skills in small groups led by our certified American Red Cross Water Safety instructors. The first 50 participants will receive a giveaway, and all participants will receive a discount code for the Fall Adult Swim Lessons.

Rutgers Student Health, Scarlet Arts Rx, Zimmerli Art Museum, and the Office of Graduate Student Life, have teamed up to bring you the SEX AND ART TOUR. An interactive evening where you will learn about Bodily Autonomy + Choice, Sex + Reproduction and Pleasure + Responsibility as inspired by viewings of different art works we will visit together in the Zimmerli's galleries. The Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution Services invites undergraduate and graduate students to join the Scarlet Honor Council! The Scarlet Honor Council is a team of students committed to upholding Rutgers community standards and promoting a safe and civil campus environment. Membership in the council is a great opportunity to develop leadership skills, meet new people, and get involved in the public life of your campus.  Members of the Scarlet Honor Council serve on the University Hearing Board and the Campus Appeals Committee and provide education and outreach to the Rutgers community. For more information about the council, click HERE. After submitting an application, students who are chosen to progress to the next stage will be invited to an interview. Appointments to the council will be made based on applications and interviews. Students who are appointed to the council must then complete the appropriate training program.
